Trend: Educational Entrepreneurism and the Personal Mba

If you haven't heard of Josh Kaufman's Personal MBA Program, then you've already missed the boat on the emerging trend of educational entrepreneurism. The Personal MBA is a collection of books that can increase your knowledge of business with a fraction of the cost of a full blown MBA, "all without setting foot inside a classroom".

Josh, after being motivated by marketing guru Seth Godin, created a manifesto detailing some 42 books and periodicals. He claims that by investing time and effort in using these resources, once can progressively develop a greater understanding of business and increase your effectiveness at work.

This is all part of an emerging trend of talented professionals taking education into their own hands, and playing by their own rules. While these individuals tend to be more entrepreneurial in spirit, many people could benefit from reading a fraction of these books and bringing a new set of knowledge and skill to their workplace.

Just like a real MBA, the Personal MBA becomes increasingly more valuable when complemented with real life work and business experience. Josh declares that 'a full 2/3 of your learning will be a direct result of your day-to-day work experiences, which provide the necessary context for understanding what you read.'.

It is clear, that people are becoming less motivated to quit their jobs and dedicate years to attaining a higher level of education. More often, individuals are continuing with their full time employment, but dedicating their leftover to either achieving a traditional MBA or second degree via distance education, or something groundbreaking like the Personal MBA.
